Chapter Eleven

My fingers shaking, I called Brendan's cell as I ran to the van. He didn't answer. I reached for him psychically and...he blocked me.

My one time boyfriend had blocked me like I was a spam caller.

"Wow." I sat back in the seat.

"What is it?"

"Brendan just shut me out."

"I don't understand."

"It's a psychic thing. I tried to reach him that way, but he won't let me in."

"What if we called the bookstore?"

"Great idea." I googled the number on my phone and hit the green call button.

"Oracle Books. This is Sharon."

"Hey. Is Brendan there?"

"Is this Mel?"

I made a face. I'd been hoping to slide past her without being recognized. Apparently, my voice was distinctive enough for that to be impossible.

"He's busy."

"It's an emergency."

"I can take a message."

"Fine." I sighed. "There's a killer at the bookstore."

"What?" Alarm spiked her voice. "A killer?"

"It's Sabine. She's going to kill Brendan."

"Sabine? Oh." There was a short silence. "Mel, can I give you some advice, woman-to-woman?"

"Advice?"

"Don't be desperate. He's married. I know that's not what you want to hear, but he's not yours anymore."

I gave an impatient huff. "This has nothing to do with that."

"It can be hard to move on, but you have to stop playing games."

I held the phone away from my ear and frowned at it for a second. "Games? What games? I'm not playing games."

The line went dead.

My jaw dropped. "She hung up on me."

I went to call the store again, but Lilia put her hand over mine. "Let's just get there as fast as we can."

On the drive to Oracle Books, I called in the body to the police, reporting it anonymously to avoid getting sucked into the crime scene. I didn't have time to give a statement. After that, I debated calling Dodd for back up.

Pro: He could help protect everyone at the bookstore. Con: It would put him in danger and I'd already done that once. It hadn't gone very well for him. Also, he'd learn that there were more than humans out there.

Undecided, I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel and pushed the van to go faster. "Do you know anything about Sabine?"

"Other than she's Brendan's wife? No. Do you really think she's the killer?"

I listed out the facts. "Sabine came through the portal. This killer is fey and killed someone right by the same portal. She's at the bookstore now and wants Brendan. Sabine makes sense."

"And if it's not her?"

"We have the necklace. If I'm wrong, we keep tracking the killer. We just need to get to Oracle books and find out if I'm right or not." I stomped on the accelerator and the van lunged forward.

My last case, I'd respected people's shields so much, it had almost gotten me killed. This time, I wasn't going to be so trusting. Sabine had just become the primary suspect.

Maybe she'd come for her husband, or maybe she was just in it for the skull cracking and brain eating.

***

The bookstore was empty, except for Sharon who nodded hello and then scurried off into the stacks, a garbage bag in each hand.
